E. B. White还有一本好书：《The Elements of Style 》(文体要义) by William Strunk Jr & E. B. White。 可以推荐给高中生阅读。下面是我的读书笔记 ("make every word tell"，我实在做不到)。 有力的文章都是简练的。一句之中不应有多余的词语，一段之中不应有多余的句子，正如一幅画中不应有多余的笔墨， 一部机器不应有多余的部件一样。但这并非要求作者把每个句子都写得很短，也不是要求他处理题材时删去一切细节， 只留下个轮廓，而是要求每个字都要起作用。 Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. If those who studied the art of writing are in accord on any one point, it is on this: the surest way to arouse and hold the attention of the reader is by being specific, definite, and concrete. The greatest writers-- Homer, Dante, Shakespeare -- are effective largely because they deal in particulars and report the details that matter. Their words call up pictures. © 2012-2023 by Yuming Si.
